November MALSP Meeting - CCPA and GDPR: Regional Laws with Global Reach

SYNOPSIS:

We're almost 18 months into the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) takes effect in 2020. What are they and how do they affect organizations and consumers nationally and locally? Join us for a spirited discussion led by Eric Chad, and help us close out another successful year of MALSP content!

PRESENTER:

Eric Chad, Partner, Merchant & Gould

As a litigator, Eric knows his clients can be overwhelmed by the adversarial litigation process, so he makes it a priority to educate them about the legal issues and expected timeline and address all their concerns. He loves getting favorable results for his clients and sharing in successes together.

Eric practices general intellectual property law with an emphasis on all forms of litigation, including cases involving patents, trademarks and trade dress, copyrights, trade secrets, misappropriation of rights of publicity, false advertising, and unfair competition.

He has successfully represented clients in all aspects of complex intellectual property disputes from pre-filing investigations through post-trial briefing and appellate work. Eric has also represented clients before the Patent and Trademark Office's Trademark Trial and Appeals Board.

Though Eric's technical education is based in the biological sciences, he has litigated cases involving a wide range of technologies, including HVAC equipment, computer hardware and software, sporting goods, pharmaceuticals, and hunting equipment.

Eric currently teaches the University of Minnesota Law School's Intellectual Property Moot Court class and coaches the IP Moot Court competition team. During law school, he clerked in-house at 3M, doing patent prosecution work. He also works with the Children's Law Center of Minnesota to represent children who have been or are in danger of being removed from their homes.
