May 2022 - Thinking Clearly About TAR by Adopting a Scientific Mindset
SYNOPSIS:
TAR is a morass of buzzwords and claims. New techniques seem to appear almost constantly, promising vast improvements over the state of the art. In this discussion, we lay out all the components of TAR such that claims may be understood in terms of how they fit into the entire TAR ecosystem. But more importantly, we expound on the scientific manner in which techniques may be assessed as to their overall value. Even if one does not do experiments oneself, knowing how to ask the right questions allows one to make better decisions about how, when, and what technology is adopted and deployed.
